The city is situated in hills and in cool climate surroundings. Kandy is one of the most ancient cities in Sri Lanka, and this city is known as the cultural capital of Sri Lanka, as well as representing the rich cultural heritage of the country. Additionally, the city is beautiful in all aspects and lies in the hills. It’s more suitable for relaxing and reflecting. Kandy gives shelter to the tooth relic of the Lord Buddha in the famous ‘Dalada Maligawa,’ or “Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic.” Every year, thousands of visitors are attracted by these temples, and these visitors include devotees as well. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988.
After 1815, the colonial era began in Sri Lanka, and Kandy was the main administrative city during the British reign period. Because of that, today we can see many British architectural buildings there.
