Yala National Park is the second largest national park and the most visited national park in Sri Lanka. It is bordered by the eastern beach of Sri Lanka, and Yala was named as a wildlife sanctuary in 1900. Today, tourists of Yala can visit this beautiful site by safari jeep that is parked at the Yala National Park with a knowledgeable guide.
This park is large, about 979 square kilometres (378 sq mi), and it is located about 300 kilometres (190 mi) from Colombo. The park is best known for its biodiversity, variety of wildlife and is important conservation of Sri Lankan elephants, Sri Lankan leopards and endemic birds. This park is very famous for wild elephants and wild leopards.





The park is situated in the dry semi-arid climatic region, and rain is received mainly during the northeast monsoon. In Yala, we found 215 bird species, including six endemic species of Sri Lanka. The number of mammals that have been recorded from the park is 44, and it has one of the highest leopard densities in the world.
Also in 2000 years ago, this site was full of meditative Buddhist monks and today we can see hundreds of their houses called stone caves. This park is very important not only for nature lovers but also for history researchers.
